Dragon Sun, Scenery and Sailing at La Trinite

Ron JAMES

The 2007 Dragon regatta at la Trinite will be in June 2007 and we will be there. We went last year and greatly enjoyed it. La Trinite is a small town/large village (it does not boast a petrol station but has several good restaurants) a few hours easy driving south of Douarnenez. It lies at the point where a small picturesque estuary narrows and sailing is what the town is about. It's Cowes with beaches, warm sun and bright, almost tropical, flowerbeds; it's Cowes without significant tide in the racing area; it's Cowes without crowded water in the large sheltered Quiberon Bay reached after a short sail down the wiggly well-buoyed estuary channel where, when the tide is out, the sandbanks are just that, yellow sand not mud !

Rigging takes place in the clean ample hard-standing area of the large marina from where the boats are craned in. They are moored on the town marina near the racing centre and bar for the après sail. The local Dragon sailors were friendly, helpful and there was a sponsored dinner and a buffet prize giving. We completed 10 good races in three days off fair lines in force 2 to 4 winds. This year the fleet was 16, with enough hot shots to test your skills against but not so many as to hog all the top places, Next year they hope to attract more boats and especially more classics to compete against those in the home fleet, so there will be a special prize for older boats.

La Trinite is in the middle of a popular holiday area centred on Carnac, so there is lots for non-sailing partners to do while we are out playing and good accommodation can be found, some within walking distance of the moorings. Yes, sun scenery and sailing (not higher, faster, longer; though he was there), a holy trinity, heaven for Dragon sailors; what more can you ask for? Come and join us next year.
